Modern mattresses are made with multiple layers of foam material. Polyfoam, memory foam, and latex are the most common foams. There are many variations in the firmness and density of each type of foam. Mattress shoppers should be familiar with foam density measurements as it is a key factor in the performance and comfort of every mattress.
This article will describe how foam density is measured and what the measurements actually mean. This article will help prospective mattress buyers select the right foam density for their comfort preferences.
Density simply refers to the weight per unit volume. It is expressed in pounds per cubic feet (PCF) in the case of foam. The density of foam can be expressed as the weight of one cubic foot of foam material.
Consider, for example, a foam layer measuring 45 kg and 25 cubic feet in volume.
Manufacturers will usually list the materials used and the density of each foam component. You can expect foam densities to range from 1.5 to 5 PCF, or more. Below is a table that lists the different density ranges of foams.
The table shows that the range of high density polyfoam can be very different from the same range for memory Foam. This is because of the unique properties of each material. It can be confusing to compare the foam densities of different mattresses due to this disconnect. Be sure to check the type of foam you are comparing, not just the density rating.
What Does Foam Density Mean?
We’ve already covered how foam density can be measured and calculated. But what does this actually mean?
The foam’s density has a major impact on its performance and feel. Foams that have a higher density feel firmer and can withstand greater pressure.
Low-density foams, on the other hand, will feel more soft but can’t withstand extreme pressure or weight.
Memory foam, in particular, is slower to recover when pressure is applied. This results in memory foam’s unique quality of leaving a lasting impression on the foam.

Manufacturers often mix foams of different density ratings to take advantage of these properties. Support cores for mattresses are typically made of high-density latex or polyfoam, while comfort layers use foams from a range of densities. A mattress may contain 2-4 layers of foam materials, each with a different density rating.
Mattress responsiveness, durability and motion isolation can all be affected by density. Low-density foams tend to be more resilient than dense foams and won’t sag as often over time. Low-density foams, on the other hand, are more able to regulate temperature, which is important for people who live in hot climates. We will be discussing other factors in the section below.
How Foam Density Affects Mattress Performance
Durability
Higher-density foams tend to last longer and are more durable than lower-density ones. They are less prone to sagging and more resistant to accidental damage or tears.
Pressure Relief/Conforming
High-density foams are more conformable than low-density ones and offer greater pressure relief than lower density foams.
Temperature neutrality
This category is better suited for low-density foams. They provide better airflow and don’t absorb as much heat than high-density foams.
Sex
Low-density foams are more springy and feel less stiff. Low- to medium density foams are best for sex.
Mattress WeightLow-density foams are lighter than high-density ones. A low-density mattress will weigh between 50-27 kg and a high-density one may weigh 41-42 kg.
Price
It is more expensive to make dense foam materials than lower-density ones, which usually results in a higher final mattress price.
Mattress Firmness And Density
While the density of foam materials and mattress firmness are definitely related, they are not necessarily the same.
The entire bed’s composition determines the firmness of a mattress. Every layer of the mattress, including different foam comfort layers, support cores and metal springs, affects how it feels.
Although a mattress might be covered with a low-density comfort layer, it will still feel firm. Mattresses with high-density support cores may feel soft.
Density is simply a measurement of the individual components of a mattress. Firmness refers to the overall mattress.
